Being a Woman: In general, it is not safe for a woman to travel alone in India. It is advised to respect local dress and customs (which I did) and to always travel with another person (which I also did…most of the time). Traveling within Hyderabad and across India I most always traveling with another person. I did travel alone toward the end of my trip, but it was always in daylight, in pubic areas, and carrying a cell phone. If I sat down to eat or take a rest, I always made sure that it was a busy place with woman and families present.
While India is generally safe for foreign visitors, it is important to note that rape is the fastest growing crime in India. Among large cities, Delhi experienced the highest number of crimes against women. Overall:
- Avoid use of public transport after dark without the company of companions
- Restrict evening entertainment to well-known venues
- Avoid isolated areas when alone
Medical Insurance: You should check to see if your insurance will go with you when you travel. In many places, doctors and hospitals still expect payment in cash at the time of service. Regular U.S. health insurance may not cover doctors’ and hospital visits in other countries. If your policy doesn’t go with you when you travel, it’s a very good idea to take out another one for your trip.
