The Gilman International Scholarship
“The Gilman Scholarship Program offers awards for undergraduate study abroad and was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide.”
In applying for the Gilman, I wrote two essays; a personal narrative and a follow-on project proposal. All Gilman Scholars are required to carry out a follow-on service project upon their return from abroad that helps to promote international education and the Gilman International Scholarship.
In my essay, I proposed putting on an International Fair for the Dawes Middle School students. I hope to recruit international students and former study abroad students to create “booths” displaying a country they are from/traveled to. The Dawes students will be able to visit the variety of booths, learn about different cultures, interact with the students, and start dreaming about traveling themselves someday!
